Playing the piano is a wonderful hobby. The world is full of amateur pianists and many of them play to an extremely high standard, but there are very few places for them to perform. Amateurs become quite frustrated by this; they need performance practice especially when they are preparing for an exam or music festival and many just want to play in a relaxed friendly atmosphere and meet like-minded players.
The Saturday Piano Salon was founded by Melanie Spanswick and myself to fulfill this need. Melanie is a concert pianist and writer. We met over 20 years ago in my hometown of Ealing when we both performed Saint-Saen’s Carnival of the Animals.
We have both had experience of students and friends who have expressed a wish to have the opportunity to perform at an informal concert or soiree, so that they may try out pieces, share repertoire, get to know more musicians and perhaps enjoy a glass of wine. The Saturday Piano Salon is a monthly event incorporating all these requirements.
The first Piano Salon will be held on Saturday 12th May 2012 at Steinway Hall in London, starting at 2.00 pm and finishing around 4.30 pm. We are hoping to welcome 15 – 20 pianists at each Salon session (there will also be tickets for observers too). Each pianist will be able to play a favourite piece (lasting a maximum of 5 minutes) on a beautiful Steinway D piano and there will also be the opportunity to have your performance video recorded so you can watch and hear yourself in action. We can either send you a private link to a Youtube video that only you can see, or we can add it to our Youtube page so that you can send the video to your family and friends.
After everyone has played there will be the opportunity to chat to your fellow performers over a glass of wine and browse the wonderful Steinway Hall piano studios.
