A great way to improve sight-reading and keep youngsters playing over the long summer break is to find books with fun pieces in that they recognise and want to learn to play. There is a fantastic series called “Just for Kids” which has tunes such as Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter, theme tunes from Batman, Star Wars, James Bond, Beauty and the Beast and loads more. There are two books – one aimed at boys, one aimed at girls. The boys’ book is, of course, blue and covered in Superheroes. The girls’ one is pink (arrgh!) and called The Princess Piano Book. Despite the terribly obvious stereotypes, these books really do go down a treat with my students.
