The past two years, I have attended an excellent piano summer school in Hereford for pianists age 18+. The Summer School for Pianists has now moved to a fantastic new venue at the University of Wolverhampton’s Walsall Campus, an all-Steinway department based in the Performance Hub. The Walsall Piano Summer school takes place on August 17 – 23 and the tutors will be James Lisney, Christine Stevenson, Karl Lutchmayer, Neil Roxburgh, Graham Fitch, Natasa Lipovsek and Catherine Edwards. The Course Director is Wendy Wyatt.
The school is a chance to meet fellow pianists and immerse yourselves completely in all things piano for a week. The price of the course includes accommodation and all meals. Each participant receives 3 individual lessons in a masterclass setting with your tutor and you can also opt to have private lessons with any tutor on the course at an additional cost.
The tutors give a recital each evening and there are fun workshops such as the duet classes and singing classes throughout the week.
The course is particularly invaluable if you are studying for an exam. The first time I attended the course, I was preparing for a Diploma exam and found it invaluable to spend a week away from family and work and just focus on my playing which is something I can rarely do whilst at home. There are lots of practice rooms that you can book daily. The culmination of the course is a student recital and a formal dinner.
Early booking for the course is advised. Two of the tutor groups are already fully booked. I am looking forward to participating in Graham Fitch‘s classes which are highly informative but presented in an easy to understand way.
